Open-ended assignment on literature

Students in classes where literature is studied are regularly asked to do an "open-ended" assignment on a piece of literature we have read as a class. This is usually in conjunction with a more traditional assignment, like an objective quiz, over the same piece of literature. This accommodates multiple learning styles and allows students to work at a level appropriate to their personal educational needs. If we are reading a longer work of literature, students are sometimes able to combine several of these assignments into single more in depth effort.
