Birds and Bees
When I first learned about the birds and the bees it was probably around second grade. I don’t know exactly who told me about the birds and the bees but I was pretty sure that it wasn’t my dad I know that for sure. I think I saw it off of a movie. I mean when you were that young you didn’t actually know what to do but you knew that it existed.
I hope that my little kid doesn’t realize this until a little bit later because I was a little horn ball way to early. I know that a lot of kids a exposed to this topic really early but I think it is a good thing because I think that young kids should realize that sex is actually a big topic. I think that parents are totally oblivious to what is going on in their teen’s life with sex. I think that sex isn’t as big of a deal now as it was when my parents were growing up. I can’t wait until I see my little brother and sister grow up and see how sex affects their life. If you are having sex with somebody it changes your whole relationship.

My response to this piece is framed in a format described here that you may use when responding to pieces on your own. It is a format that comes highly recommended.
1) The things that stuck in my mind after reading this piece were a) that he learned something about this in the second grade, b) he didn't learn it from his dad, c) the phrase "little horn ball," d) parents don't know about their teens sexual activity, and e) sex isn't as big of deal as it used to be.
2) I'm curious about what Blake actually learned, probably "off a movie," in 2nd grade. Birds and Bees is a pretty big topic, so I wonder if Blake means that was his first awareness of people having sex, or his first idea of where babies come from, or some other aspect. If he wanted to write a longer piece on this topic, I'd be curious about if there are other places where the sketchy details started to get filled in as he got older. I'd also be curious about how he felt about this new information at the age of 2.
There was nothing in the instructions for this assignment about proofreading; I'm sure if there had been, Blake would have caught most of the following: "pretty sure" and "I know that for sure" are repetitious in the second sentence. I'm not sure how you "saw it off of a movie;" "in a movie" would be better. There should be a comma before "but you knew that it existed." "Way to early" should be "way too early." There's a typo where "a exposed" should be "are exposed, and there should be a comma after " . . . really early. In the second to last sentence "their life" should be "their lives," since there are more than one of them.
3) When I was in confirmation class in Jr. High, they gave us this little paperback called "Facts of Life and Love for Teenagers." We thought it was pretty funny because of the hand drawn outlines of genitals and the way it described things, but I'll have to admit that even at that age there were a few things in there that I didn't know. There were also a lot of things that I did know that weren't in there, but I'm not sure where I got most of them. One of my best friends (who happened to be our Minister's son) had a very dirty mind and was quite sexually advanced in grade school, and he told me a lot of sex stuff. I didn't believe much of what he told me because it didn't sound like it could be true, and he liked to play jokes on people, but it turned out later that a lot of the things he told me were actually true.
If Blake's piece of writing was a mode of transportation, it would be an electric motorized scooter, like the Hot Scoot.
