El Coqui
Did you know that the “mascot” for Puerto Rico is a very unique tree frog? This frog is called a Coqui. The coqui is unique for many reasons. One reason is because of its locations, another is the size, and one is because of how it develops. So today, by reading this, you will learn more information about each of these reasons that makes this Puerto Rican tree frog so special.
The first unique feature that will be covered is the location and number of coquis. Coquis are only found in Puerto Rico. There are 16 native species of coquis, 13 are in the Caribbean National Forest. 11of the 13 are endemic species and only 2 of the total 16 produce the sound “co-kee”. (Welcome to Puerto Rico)
The second unique feature that will be covered is the size. Coquis can be as small as 15mm to 80mm in length. The female coqui is usually 30% bigger male. These frogs can be brown, yellow, or green, or even translucent. Coquis also have disks or pads on the tips of their toes, which help them cling to slippery surfaces. (Monkeyshines) Most Coquis are terrestrial, but there is one species that is web-footed because it is mainly a swimmer.
The last unique feature is the development cycle of coquis. These tree frogs do not pass through a tadpole stage. First the female lays the egg (about 28 per clutch) in a humid terrestrial environment. In at least 5 of the species, the male broods and guards the eggs and females are aggressively forced away from the eggs soon after laying. At the end of the incubation period(17 to 27 days), a froglet, a tiny replica of the adult, emerges from each egg. When they are born they have tails, which quickly disappears. (El Boricua)
