It took my friends and myself a little longer than most teenagers to discover chemical substances as an alternative to boring weekend activities; we held off, claiming we had no interest in trying it, or were better off without it, and we probably were. Eventually, most public high-school students end up experimenting, and we also fell into that demographic. We tried all sorts of things, and combinations, having the time of our lives every weekend wherever we could. After not too long though, and several altercations with my parents, I came to the conclusion that in the end, the lifestyle you lead will catch up with you. I looked at many friends and people I knew and saw this same rule holding true, and many of them fell into far worse luck than myself, ending up in trouble with the law. I approached a friend of mine while walking through “C” lot, who was still drinking heavily, and gave him this little piece of wisdom. I told him that if he didn’t back off, eventually and inevitably it would catch up with him. He laughed and shrugged it off confidently, assuring me that he would never “get caught.” I tried to warn him, and suggested the idea that maybe he wouldn’t get caught, or fall into legal trouble, but something completely unexpected could happen. Again, my advice had no weight on his actions, and he continued drinking, partying, and in short, fucking up.
Not too long afterwards, it happened. Everything he had done came raging back to bite him in the ass. The result was not a DUI or a few months with diversion, but a child and two teen parents. I’m not saying he hasn’t dealt well with the situation, or is depressed, but from my own stand-point, am sure that his life may have been a little better without these happenings.

Author’s Note: The first piece of writing is actually just a mix of various words that I saw around the room. From my vantage point looking forward, there are various books and boxes with things inscribed upon them. I took these words and combined them into somewhat coherent sentences. Then at another point, after running out of words on the wall, I picked up a dictionary and began concocting sentences with words I found there. Some sentences turned out kind of cool, others not so much. But there really was no point to the passage at all. The second piece of writing here was a reflection; attempting to be mostly about the advice I gave my friend and his unwillingness to listen. Since writing it, my friend had his child, and I was able to visit them at the hospital. I regret saying that his life may have been better without this baby. It is for fairly selfish reasons that I wish it had never happened, many plans that we had for the future will now never happen. We will not be able to hang out as we have in the past. He appears to be very happy now, and I know for a fact that he is very proud, presenting baby pictures every chance that he gets. I still believe though that there is somewhat of a lesson in the story, about listening to others, because sometimes they may know what’s best.

This was handed in for the assignment To Be Read Aloud To Class. The first part, above the horizontal line, was not handed in with what was read aloud. Though it is not connected with the story line of the part below it, there may be a way in which the two pieces belong together. In the second part Charlie talks about what he learned from some previous experience, but I can't help but wonder if the first part doesn't reflect a very different kind of learning that may not have been possible without the experience described in the second part. Anyway, I like the syllogistically-styled and alliteratively-surreal language play in the first part as much as I like the sincere-without-being-preachy-tone of the second.
I also had an experience with a former LSE student that reminds of the part where Charlie describes trying to give advice to a friend. This student partied heavy and was openly proud of the fact in spite of his numerous problems, including trouble with the law. I, and others, frequently talked with him about his problem, but he couldn't see it, and bragged about his drinking dominated plans for the future. He acted as though nothing could stop him and he was invicible. He wasn't. He never made it to the age of 20.
I have not commented on any stylistic or proofreading problems with this writing because it is already very strong with respect to both.
