A Senior English Class recently chose and watched The Bourne Identity as part of a thematic unit on memory. Here's what they have to say about it.

This movie really didn't give much cause to reflect about memory. The memory loss was just a plot device. In fact, the movie wasn't about much, but was still a well done action entertainment. I doubt that anyone learned very much from watching this, but if you did please let me know in a comment below. Of course, a person can learn from anything if it is approached with a thoughtful, questioning attitude, but I'm betting most students just watched it as entertainment. Here's your chance to prove me wrong. The above link will connect you to the main page for this movie at Internet Movie Data Base, and there you will find numerous other links to give you ideas relating to the movie, including reviews, a discussion board, trivia, quotations from the movie, etc. Even if you only watched the movie as entertainment, you can still write about what you did or didn't like about the movie, scenes that you thought were particularly good (or bad), comparisons to other movies (or books), etc.

I don't think that the movie had much to do with memory, or really anything to do with what we were talking about. It was an interesting movie, but I think that there were movies with a lot more to do with memory than this one. Too many people were just too wrapped up in wanting to see shit explode to appreciate a good movie with less action, but more depth and more to do with what we are talking about.

I think that The general basis for the plot of the movie had to deal with memory. The overall movie itself had nothng to do with memory, and not really a lot to do with what we have been studying. I don't think that The Bourne Identity was a bad choice of a movie to watch during class. We could have chose a movie that relates better to memory itself. Overall I think that the movie is a good movie, and I enjoyed watching it.

Though concious memory was only a plot device, the movie had a very big, if unseen, focus on sub-concious memory. From tying the ropes with special knots, to remembering how to fight in almost any situation, this movie emphasized the independence between concious and sub-concious memory.

I'd also like to add that, this aside, the storyline was very good (negating the very last scene), as was the action.

I didn't see where memory really tied in very significantly either. I understand that Bourne losing his memory of what happened during his assignment does somewhat relate, although I really do not believe that it had much to do with our unit on memory. It was really only a device they used to keep the movie going and to give it context. I think that people really just would have rather seen an action movie than something that really truly related to the topic fully.

I really enjoyed the movie and unlike the other comments, think that it is relevant to the theme of memory. The entire plot is based around the fact that his memory had been temporarily erased, and he is being chased for reasons unknown to him or the viewers. They add some action into it for Hollywood purposes. But I thought that it was an enjoyable endeavor.

I think that this movie didn't have that much to do with memory. The movie is a good movie and I think that people just really wanted to see the action and didn't even really think about the memory unit. I think that A Beautiful Mind would've been a better choice for this unit and there are many more good movies that would've fit in this unit.

I really like the movie. Jason Bourne is a good actor in this movie. I liked the action scenes in the movie because it makes me feel more into the movie. I didnt catch the whole memory thing but i think get it. I wish we could watch the sequal.

I think that the movie did have a lot to do with memory. The whole movie was about him trying to figure out who he was and what his job was. I think that the ending really had the most to do with memory. Jason didn't remember anything until he met his boss, who basically told Jason parts of his job and how he messed it up. While he was being told what he did he was having flashbacks of what he did on the ship. His memory began to come back after he had been reminded of what he was sent there to do. I think that the movie really showed how a persons memory can change who they really are and how they behave.

I really didn't care for the movie. I didn't personally learned anything about memory in this movie. Just watching this movie was a big waste of time. Personally, I think Beautiful Mind would have more to deal with memory then Bourne Identity.

Posted by: Charlene M. at March 4, 2005 12:23 PM

Although the movie was about memory it seemed more indirectly than what another movie, like beutiful mind, could show us. I think they showed more action and romance than getting the memory point across.

Posted by: Dani B. at March 4, 2005 12:25 PM

I think that this movie did not tie in with our memory unit. I think that we could have found a better movie to tie into this unit. I think that people just wanted to watch an action movie and i think that if we would have watched a beautiful mind that we would have seen a better movie about memory.

Posted by: Jen 6831 at March 4, 2005 12:29 PM

It's hard to find a movie that really ties in with the theme of "memory" and I think we could have done a lot worse than BI. Everyone says the plot is contrived, but amnesia can be a very strong motivating factor for the main character. It tends to be used too much or not well enough in stories which is why it seems like a lame excuse for explosions and kung-fu fighting.

Posted by: 190868 at March 4, 2005 12:34 PM

I thought that this was a pretty good movie. I also thought that this movie fit in real well with memory. I think it would really stink to have amnesia, even if only temporarilly because it would be scary and you don't know if you will ever remember your past.

Posted by: Trevor L at March 4, 2005 12:34 PM

I thought that the movie was very good. Although, a good movie really didn't fit in with our unit that much. It entertained me, I'm not going to lie. I wouldn't choose that movie to put in a memory unit. I would say that is a entertainment movie that everyone must see, but not in school. Overall i had a good time watching the movie and The Spencmister gives it one thumb up.

Posted by: Spencer at March 4, 2005 12:41 PM

Although this movie doesn't directly relate to our theme there were parts in the movie, like when he had flashbacks of what actually happened, that shows the use of memory. I think another movie might have tied in more with our unit but it's not a bad movie.

The movie was a great action movie but didn't focus enough on his memory loss. Also, because I had already seen the movie before, I didn't pay attention to the memoryness.
